In India marriage is considered a sacred affair or holy union of two souls. These days we often see that foreign nation girls come to India and spend their whole life here after falling in love and marrying a desi Indian boy. Opposite to this sometimes love at first sight or it is said that love knows no boundaries a desi boy from India meets any girl in abroad and gets married to her.
Looking into the increasing trend of people getting married abroad or marrying with NRI or
Indians; Foreign Marriage Act was passed in the year 1969 to provide provisions for
marriages of Indian citizens who are outside the territories of India.
However, in 1954, the Indian Government enforced the Special Marriage Act. Under Section
4 of the Special Marriage Act “any two persons” and hence, even a foreigner and an Indian
can get their marriage registered under the aforementioned act. A marriage between a
foreigner and an Indian citizen will deem to be valid if it is registered under the Special
Marriage Act, 1954.
Many film celebrities have married foreign nationals, viz., actor Purab Kohli has married his
UK-based live-in partner Lucy Payton; Preity Zinta married Gene Goodenough, an American
based in Los Angeles. Recently Vicky Kaushal has tied the marriage knot with Katrina Kaif,
a British actress; famous actress Priyanka Chopra married Nick Jonas. Similarly, late PM
Rajiv Gandhi met Antonia Edvige Albina Maino at a restaurant in Cambridge. They fell in
love and later married. She settled in India, changed her name to Sonia Gandhi. Famous film
actor Shashi Kapoor and Jennifer Kendal met in Kolkata in 1956 at the Prithvi Theater, where
Jennifer was a part of a Shakespearean voyaging troupe. He fell in love with her and they got
hitched in 1958 and had three kids.
There are many such stories. Apart from love at first sight, usually, it has been seen that a girl
or a boy from any foreign nation attracts towards an Indian alliance as Indian culture not only
appeals to them tremendously but also, they find Indians more loyal and committed toward
the sacred relationship of marriage.
